Ghana’s Black Satellites have been eliminated from the 2026 WAFU B U-20 Championship after a goalless draw with Togo in their final Group B match at the Charles Konan Banny Stadium in Yamoussoukro, Cote d’Ivoire.
The result on Sunday, 2 August 2026, left Maxwell Konadu’s side third in Group B with two points from three matches and ended their hopes of reaching the knockout stage.
Ghana controlled large periods of the game and produced the more promising opportunities, but could not turn their pressure into a goal. Their frustration was compounded when a goal was ruled out, leaving the Black Satellites to settle for a point.
The draw completed a disappointing group campaign for Ghana, who also suffered defeat against Nigeria and drew with Burkina Faso. With only two points from their three fixtures, they finished behind the teams progressing from Group B.
Although the early exit will be a setback, the tournament has provided valuable competitive experience for a young Ghanaian squad. The Black Satellites faced some of the strongest youth teams in West Africa during the competition, giving the players an opportunity to test themselves at international level.
The matches have also allowed head coach Maxwell Konadu and his technical team to assess the squad ahead of Ghana’s next assignments. The coaching staff will now turn their attention to preparations for the 2027 TotalEnergies CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Ghana have already qualified for the 2027 U-20 AFCON as the host nation, meaning their participation in the continental tournament is guaranteed. That makes the WAFU B Championship an important part of the team’s build-up, despite their failure to reach the knockout rounds.
The competition in Cote d’Ivoire therefore served both as a regional championship and as a test of Ghana’s readiness for the responsibilities that come with hosting the next U-20 AFCON. The Black Satellites’ performances against Nigeria, Burkina Faso and Togo have given the technical team further information about the squad as preparations continue.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has not yet announced the dates or venues for the 2027 U-20 AFCON. In the meantime, Ghana’s National Sports Authority is upgrading facilities across the country to ensure they meet the standards required to host the competition.
For the Black Satellites, attention now shifts away from the WAFU B Championship and towards the longer-term objective of building a competitive team for the 2027 continental tournament on home soil.
