Ghana’s Black Satellites have been eliminated from the 2026 WAFU Zone B U-20 Championship after a 0-0 draw with Togo in their final Group B match at the Charles Konan Banny Stadium in Yamoussoukro, Cote d’Ivoire, yesterday.
The result ended Ghana’s campaign at the group stage, with Maxwell Konadu’s side needing a victory to keep their hopes of reaching the next round alive.
Ghana controlled large periods of the match and created several opportunities, but they could not find the goal required to progress. Their efforts were frustrated by a combination of missed chances and disciplined defending from Togo.
The Black Satellites had entered the decisive game under significant pressure following a difficult start to the tournament. They opened their campaign with a 4-2 defeat by Nigeria before drawing 1-1 with Burkina Faso in their second Group B fixture.
Those results meant Ghana had no alternative but to beat Togo in their final group match. However, despite their attacking intent and periods of dominance, they were unable to break through a resilient Togolese defence.
The goalless draw leaves Ghana without a win in the competition and brings their participation in the 2026 WAFU Zone B U-20 Championship to an early conclusion.
Although the exit will be disappointing for the team, the tournament gave the Ghanaian players an opportunity to compete against some of the strongest youth sides in the West African sub-region.
Throughout the championship, the Black Satellites displayed resilience, determination and a willingness to attack. The experience gained from their three Group B matches is expected to form part of the team’s longer-term development.
The competition also allowed head coach Maxwell Konadu to examine his squad in a demanding competitive setting. Several players were given the chance to demonstrate their ability and compete for places in the team ahead of future assignments.
Ghana’s position as hosts of the 2027 TotalEnergies CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations means the team is already guaranteed a place in that tournament. As a result, the WAFU B Championship represented an important stage in the side’s preparations for the longer-term challenges ahead.
The Black Satellites will now reflect on their performances in Cote d’Ivoire, with their group-stage elimination coming after the defeat by Nigeria, the draw with Burkina Faso and the final stalemate against Togo.
