Ghanaians are criticising Ayew brothers unfairly – George Afriyie

Former GFA Vice-President, George Afriyie believes Ghanaians have been unnecessarily hard on the Ayew brothers.

The two sons of the legendary Abedi Pele have seemingly become easy targets for criticism whenever the senior national team plays.

Many have even called for their heads, demanding they are not called into the Black Stars again.

But Afriyie, a former leading member of the Black Stars Management Committee thinks Ghanaians have been unfair to the brothers.

“I think we’ve been unfair to them [Andre and Jordan Ayew],” he stated in an interview with Untold Stories TV GH.

“Yes, as footballers, they all have their flaws. But trust me if a player is playing in the English Premier League week-in-week-out, what will be the justification for not calling him? It is the same justification I will call for the inclusion of Jeffrey Schlupp. For me, if you call Jordan Ayew, you’ve invited a good player from a good league.

Afriyie continued: “People have the right to criticizs. Like we [normally] say, ‘we have 30 million coaches.’ All of us have our opinions as far as call-ups are concerned so that one you can’t blame people for what they say. But I’m saying that we are criticising them unfairly. I’ve had the opportunity to work with both players

“In key times, Jordan has delivered… He has scored crucial goals for us. And he is a player that if you have monitored him when he is determined to do it, he does it,” the one-time GFA Presidential candidate added.

The Ayew brothers are in line to make Ghana’s squad for the Qatar 2022 Fifa World Cup next month.
