Germany-born Ghanaian forward Aaron Opoku has issued a public apology for the cynical red card he received over the weekend in the German Bundesliga 2.
The Hamburg winger picked up one of the craziest red cards of the season in his side’s 2-1 defeat to Darmstadt on Friday evening.
Darmstadt took a two-goal lead after just seven minutes played thanks to goals from Patric Pfeiffer and Phillip Tietz.
Opoku started the match on the bench and was subbed on in the second half with the hopes that he could change the game.
However, he was on the pitch for just eight minutes after being sent off in cynical fashion.
Hamburg were on the break after Opuku, who had already picked up a yellow card, beat two players in the centre of the park.
In a desperate attempt to break up the counter, Darmstadt’s Fabian Holland grabbed Opoku’s shorts and prevented him from joining the attack.
That’s when Opoku lost it and after failing to shake off Holland, the 23-year-old lashed out and booted his opponent straight in the stomach.
The referee saw the whole incident unfold and stopped play immediately. He proceeded to jog over to Opoku and give him his marching orders.
“I apologize again publicly because what happened to me last Friday doesn’t belong in professional sports, but I let my emotion get the better of me, which still doesn’t excuse the whole thing. Of course I will bear every consequence & still come back stronger I make mistakes & learn from them I thank the team and everyone around me who give me courage and support me positively ?.” He posted on his social networks to apologise for his silly conduct.
Opoku is expected to be suspended for six to eight games, with a return to action in October.
