American-Ghanaian striker Patrick Agyemang was the hero on Saturday afternoon, scoring a late winner to secure a 1–0 victory for Derby County away at Preston North End in the English Championship.
Leading the line in a 4-2-3-1 setup, Agyemang settled a tense contest in the 82nd minute, showing sharp instincts inside the box to finish clinically after excellent work down the left flank by Ben Brereton Díaz.
Derby County had enjoyed the better of the chances for much of the game, registering 18 shots compared to Preston’s 13 and posting the higher expected goals.
However, they were kept at bay until sustained pressure finally paid off late on. Brereton Díaz drove directly at the Preston defence before squaring the ball for Agyemang, who calmly guided his effort home to break the deadlock.
The crucial strike proved decisive, lifting Derby further clear of mid-table congestion and extending a solid run of league form as they respond positively to recent defeats against Leeds United and Wrexham.
Agyemang’s goal continues an impressive 2025/26 Championship campaign for the Ghanaian-born forward. He has now featured in 23 league matches, scoring seven goals and providing three assists, underlining his growing influence in Derby’s attacking setup.
Derby County will now turn their attention to their next fixture, an away clash against Charlton Athletic at The Valley on Tuesday, January 20, as they push closer to the Championship playoff places.
