Ghana U20 captain Kelvin Nkrumah is close to completing a move from Medeama SC to Portuguese giants FC Porto, in what is expected to be one of the biggest transfers involving a Ghana Premier League youngster this summer.
The 19-year-old midfielder is expected to finalise the transfer after returning from the WAFU B U20 Championship, where he is leading the Black Satellites in their regional campaign.
Nkrumah is understood to be set to begin his career at FC Porto with the club’s Under-19 team. The move is intended to give him a route through the Portuguese side’s highly regarded youth development structure, with progression to the reserve team and, eventually, the senior squad forming part of the longer-term plan.
The proposed transfer comes after two productive seasons at Medeama SC, during which Nkrumah established himself as one of the most promising young midfielders in the Ghana Premier League.
He made 57 appearances across the past two Ghana Premier League campaigns. That total included 30 league matches during the 2025/26 season, when he scored two goals.
While his contribution in front of goal has been limited, Nkrumah has attracted attention for other aspects of his game. His composure in possession, tactical understanding, leadership and ability to dictate the pace of matches have helped him emerge as an important player for both club and country.
His development also led to an opportunity to train with the Black Stars last season. That experience underlined the growing confidence in his ability to progress to the senior international level.
The possible move to FC Porto would place Nkrumah within a Portuguese football system that has provided a route into elite European football for many young African players. Portugal has long been viewed as an important development environment, and the Ghanaian midfielder is expected to continue his progression there before attempting to move closer to first-team football.
For now, Nkrumah’s immediate focus remains the WAFU B U20 Championship, where he is captaining the Black Satellites. The transfer is expected to be completed once Ghana’s involvement in the competition has ended.
If the deal is finalised as anticipated, Nkrumah will begin a new stage of his career in Portugal after making his name in the Ghana Premier League. His initial placement with FC Porto’s U19 side will give him the opportunity to adapt to a new footballing environment while continuing his development within one of Europe’s established youth systems.
The move would also represent a significant step for Medeama SC, whose midfielder has progressed from Ghanaian domestic football to the academy structure of one of Portugal’s biggest clubs. Nkrumah’s performances over the past two seasons, combined with his leadership of the Black Satellites, have positioned him for the next phase of his career.
