Ghana will make significant changes to the Black Satellites squad before hosting the 2027 CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, head coach Maxwell Konadu has confirmed.
Konadu says the team will not simply continue with the group that represented Ghana at the 2026 WAFU B U-20 Championship, despite the tournament being used as an important assessment exercise.
“We won’t present the same team,” Konadu said, signalling a major rebuilding process ahead of next year’s continental competition.
The Black Satellites were eliminated at the group stage in Cote d’Ivoire, a result that fell below the expectations of the coaching staff. Konadu acknowledged that Ghana had not reached the required standard and said the technical team would now work towards forming a stronger squad for the tournament on home soil.
The former Asante Kotoko coach explained that the WAFU B U-20 Championship had primarily been used to examine players based in Ghana. The competition gave the technical team an opportunity to assess their qualities in a competitive environment and identify individuals who could remain part of the national team’s plans.
Some of those players impressed during the tournament and have kept themselves in contention for selection. However, Konadu made it clear that participation in the WAFU competition does not guarantee a place in the squad for the 2027 CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations.
Instead, the group will be reviewed as the coaching staff continues its search for the best available players. The competition for places is expected to become more intense over the coming months, with the technical team assessing additional talent from both Ghana and abroad.
That process will include further scouting of local players as well as Ghanaian footballers based outside the country. The aim is to assemble a squad with the strength and quality required to challenge for the continental title when Ghana hosts the tournament in 2027.
Konadu’s comments point to a clear change in approach following the Black Satellites’ group-stage departure in Cote d’Ivoire. Rather than relying on the same squad, Ghana intends to use the period before the home tournament to reassess its options and improve the team.
The 2026 WAFU B U-20 Championship therefore served as an initial evaluation rather than the final selection process. Players who performed well remain under consideration, while others may be replaced as the technical team continues its scouting work.
With Ghana preparing to compete on home soil, Konadu and his staff now face the task of building a squad capable of meeting the expectations attached to the 2027 CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations. The coach has confirmed that changes will be made, with local and foreign-based talent competing for places in a rebuilt Black Satellites team.
