Ghana to play Brazil in pre-World Cup friendly

The Black Stars will face Brazil in a 2022 Fifa World Cup warm-up match on Friday, September 23, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has announced.

The Selecao – who have Cameroon as group opponents at Qatar 2022 – own an unblemished record in all four previous meetings with the African giants, with the last game being the 1-0 friendly win in September 2011 at Fulham FC’s Craven Cottage home grounds. Crystal Palace forward Jordan Ayew is the only surviving member of that Ghana squad that faced Brazil 11 years ago.

Venue for this fifth confrontation between Ghana and Brazil is yet to be confirmed but there are indications the game will be played in Europe.

The Black Stars got this opportunity to test themselves against the five-time World Cup winners due to the rescheduling of the 2023 Afcon qualifiers by Caf to allow its representatives to focus on preparations for the Mundial in Qatar.

Coach Otto Addo is expected to announce his squad in early September.

Ghana could announce another game that will see the Stars play two friendlies during the upcoming international break.

Earlier in June, the GFA announced a pre-World Cup friendly with Switzerland to be played at Baniyas Stadium in Abu Dhabi on November 17.  The match – which will be the first meeting between the two countries at the senior level – will serve as the final preparatory match for the Stars.

Ghana will open their fourth World Cup campaign seven days later – against Portugal, then South Korea on November 28 before wrapping up their matches in Group H vs 2010 nemesis Uruguay on December 2.
