Ghana head coach Maxwell Konadu says the Black Satellites will field a significantly different squad at the 2027 CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations after their early elimination from the 2026 WAFU B U-20 Championship in Cote d’Ivoire.
Ghana exited the regional tournament at the group stage after taking only two points from three matches. They lost to Nigeria in their opening fixture before drawing with Burkina Faso and Togo.
Their hopes of reaching the semi-finals depended on victory in their final Group B match against Togo, but the Black Satellites were held to a goalless draw at the Charles Konan Banny Stadium in Yamoussoukro on Sunday.
The result ended Ghana’s campaign and represented a disappointing outcome for a side that had travelled to Cote d’Ivoire targeting the title.
Konadu, the former Asante Kotoko coach, acknowledged that Ghana had not achieved what it set out to do but said the experience would help the team prepare for next year’s continental competition.
“The team came here to compete and to win. Having said that, we also know there were one or two things that didn’t go according to plan. In football, you don’t always get everything 100 per cent,” Konadu said.
Despite the failure to progress, the coach rejected the idea that the result would damage the team’s confidence. He believes the disappointment can instead provide motivation as Ghana begins preparations for the 2027 CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations.
“This is not going to demotivate us. Rather, it will encourage us to give our best. We have to move on, reorganise ourselves and come back stronger,” he added.
Konadu also confirmed that Ghana will make substantial changes to the squad before the tournament. New players are expected to be brought into the group as the Black Satellites attempt to challenge for the title on home soil.
“We came here to win, but it didn’t work out. We will reorganise ourselves. Definitely, we will not present the same team for the AFCON next year,” he said.
Ghana will host the 2027 CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations as part of celebrations marking the country’s 70th Independence Anniversary. The hosts will be under pressure to deliver a stronger performance in front of their home supporters after their disappointing showing in Cote d’Ivoire.
The Black Satellites began the WAFU B tournament with a defeat by Nigeria, leaving them needing results from their remaining matches. Although draws against Burkina Faso and Togo gave Ghana two points, they were not enough to secure a place in the knockout stage.
Konadu now intends to use the lessons from the regional competition to reorganise the team before the continental tournament. With Ghana hosting the event, expectations will be high that a renewed Black Satellites squad can compete for the trophy.
