Black Satellites head coach Maxwell Konadu says pressure from supporters is an essential part of football and can help drive improvement, despite Ghana’s disappointing group-stage exit at the 2026 WAFU U-20 Championship in Ivory Coast.
Ghana collected only two points from three matches and finished third in Group B, ending their hopes of reaching the knockout stage.
The Black Satellites began the tournament with a 4-2 defeat by Nigeria. They then drew 1-1 with Burkina Faso before a goalless result against Togo in their final group match left them unable to progress.
Konadu was speaking to Citi Sports after the team returned to Ghana. He recognised the scrutiny that comes with managing one of the country’s national teams but argued that criticism from supporters should be accepted as part of football rather than rejected.
“Without pressure from fans, football won’t get to where it needs to be. The only thing is that some people take things too personally,” Konadu said.
The coach, who previously served as an assistant with the Black Stars, said strong expectations were unavoidable in Ghana because of the depth of feeling surrounding the country’s national teams.
Supporters’ reaction has followed a difficult campaign in Ivory Coast, where Ghana were unable to secure a win in any of their three group fixtures. Their defeat by Nigeria was followed by draws against Burkina Faso and Togo, but the two points they collected were not enough to secure a place in the next stage.
Konadu maintained that criticism, when expressed constructively, can contribute to higher standards and encourage teams to improve their performances. He said it should not automatically be interpreted as a personal attack on coaches or players.
His comments come after the Black Satellites’ early departure from a regional competition that had offered Ghana an opportunity to test its under-20 team against other West African nations.
The team will now turn its attention to preparations for the 2027 CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations. Ghana is scheduled to host that competition as part of celebrations marking the country’s 70th Independence Anniversary.
That tournament will provide the Black Satellites with another major target after their failure to advance from the group stage in Ivory Coast. Konadu’s message is that the demands placed on the team by Ghanaian supporters should be seen as part of the process of raising performance levels, rather than something that should be removed from the game.
