Ghana and Rio Ave forward Abdul-Aziz Yakubu eyes World Cup spot

Rio Ave forward Abdul-Aziz Yakubu has disclosed his desire of representing Ghana at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Yakubu is in fine form for the Primeira Liga side this season, scoring five goals in seven appearances.

Last season, the 23-year-old played a key role in helping Rio Ave clinch the Liga Portuga 2, making 33 appearances and scoring 11 goals in the process.

Despite his impressive performance for his club, he was omitted from the Ghana squad for the September friendlies however, he is confident he will the final squad for the global showpiece.

“I think so [on whether he has a chance], the numbers speak for me,” Aziz told Zerozero in an interview.

“Ghanaian websites and journalists talk about me, so I believe, let’s see. I hope to have the opportunity to represent my country one day and if it’s at the World Cup, perfect.

He added, “Last season I already had good numbers [in terms of goals], but in Ghana, they always said ‘ah, but he plays in the second league’. Now I play in the I Liga, so I hope they don’t keep downplaying my goals.’
