Former Ghana Football Association Vice-President George Afriyie has thrown his support behind Black Stars coach Otto Addo over calls to invite Eddie Nketiah and Callum Hudson-Odoi to the national team.
With Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup opener against Panama set for June 17 in Toronto, discussions around the England-born duo have resurfaced.
Both players previously turned down Ghana but are now reportedly open to switching allegiance following the country’s qualification.
Speaking to Graphic Sports, Afriyie insisted player invitations should be based strictly on merit.
“The Black Stars belong to every Ghanaian everywhere so long as he is a Ghanaian and a footballer in top shape, playing in the top league and qualifies to play for the Black Stars, I don’t see why he cannot be invited,” he said.
He maintained that the technical team must make the final decision.
“If, in the wisdom of Otto Addo, looking at the squad depth now, the addition of these two players can make an impact and help Ghana at the World Cup, it depends on the coach.”
Ghana have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia, raising concerns about squad strength ahead of the tournament.
