Felix Magath, former coach of Bayern Munich, has reportedly expressed keen interest in the vacant coaching position for the Ghana national football team, Ghanasoccernet has reported.

The position became available after the dismissal of Chris Hughton following Ghana’s disappointing performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where they exited the tournament in the group stage.

Hughton, an Irish-Ghanaian coach, faced termination after the Black Stars’ lacklustre display in all three group matches. In their final game, Ghana squandered a two-goal lead, drawing 2-2 and subsequently crashing out of the competition. Responding swiftly to the underwhelming results, a search committee was formed to find a suitable replacement for Hughton.

According to Magath’s agent, Vukoja Josip, the 70-year-old coach is highly interested in taking on the Ghana job. Magath’s extensive experience and successful track record align with the criteria set by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) for the coaching position.

Magath, a former accomplished footballer, transitioned into coaching after winning numerous accolades as a player, including three Bundesliga titles and European honours. In his coaching career, he notably managed Bayern Munich for three years, securing two Bundesliga titles and two DFB-Pokal trophies.

Additionally, he clinched the Bundesliga with Wolfsburg and earned three German Football Manager of the Year awards.

The GFA has imposed a three-week deadline for the search committee to identify a suitable replacement for Hughton, and Magath emerges as a strong contender due to his impressive credentials.

With the Ghana national team in need of a fresh start, Magath’s reputation as a disciplined and successful coach could potentially bring out the best in the talented players of the Black Stars.
