A FIFA-licensed agent says he advised Libyan club Al Swehly not to pursue a move for Jordan Ayew because of the forward’s responsibilities as captain of Ghana’s Black Stars.
Nana Kwarteng revealed that Al Swehly had identified Ayew as a potential attacking signing and was considering making a transfer bid for the experienced Ghana international.
However, Kwarteng said he opposed the proposed move after weighing the impact it could have on Ayew’s career, particularly because of his position as national-team captain.
“Al Swehly initially wanted to sign Jordan Ayew, but I advised against it because he is captain of the Black Stars,” he said, as reported by Max TV.
The comments come as Ayew looks for a new club after leaving Leicester City at the end of his contract. Leicester City were relegated in the 2025/2026 season, and Ayew is now without a club as the summer 2026 transfer deadline approaches.
The 2027 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers are due to begin in September 2026, increasing the importance of Ayew securing regular club football before Ghana’s qualifying campaign gets under way.
Ayew has continued to train at Nania Park in an effort to maintain his fitness while his representatives work on finding his next club. He has been joined there by former Ghana midfielder Mubarak Wakaso, his brother Andre Ayew and other players.
The forward and his camp are working to complete a move before the transfer window closes. The search for a club comes at a significant point in Ayew’s international career, with his leadership role in the Black Stars remaining central to the decision-making around his future.
Kwarteng’s disclosure suggests that the proposed move to Al Swehly was considered seriously enough for the Libyan club to explore Ayew’s profile and plan a possible offer. It is not clear from the comments whether formal negotiations took place or whether a bid was ultimately submitted.
Ayew’s immediate priority is now to find a new team while continuing his fitness programme. His availability follows the expiration of his Leicester City contract, with the club’s relegation marking the end of his time there.
The 2026 summer window is nearing its deadline, leaving limited time for Ayew to finalise his next move before the start of the September AFCON qualifying fixtures.
His club situation will be closely monitored in Ghana, where the captaincy of the Black Stars makes his preparation and availability particularly important ahead of the national team’s 2027 African Cup of Nations campaign.
