Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has urged the Black Stars’ technical handlers to prioritize talent and performance over past decisions when considering players for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
His comments come as Ghana’s qualification for the global showpiece reignites debate over whether the national team should extend invitations to foreign-born players who once turned down opportunities to represent the country.
Several names, including Eddie Nketiah of Crystal Palace, Callum Hudson-Odoi of Nottingham Forest, and Francis Amuzu of Grêmio, have reportedly expressed interest in joining the Black Stars setup.
In Parliament, Felix Kwakye Ofosu advised that a pragmatic approach should guide future selections.
“It is true that there were some players who rebuffed our entreaties in the past because perhaps they were hedging to see if nations who have a higher profile in international football would give them a call,” he said.
He continued: “In the areas where we are weak, if there are players who have shown greater ability than the current players we have, we consider them, based on merit.
“If we are not careful and we act out of emotion, we may make mistakes that will come back to haunt us.”
