Ex-Manchester United star names Lionel Messi ‘the best of all time’

Former Manchester United star Ander Herrera has this weekend been full of praise for PSG teammate, Lionel Messi.

Lionel Messi joined PSG last summer, departing long-time club FC Barcelona in the biggest transfer story of the year.

He endured a slow start to life in Paris, but was still able to end 2021/22 with 11 goals and 15 assists in 34 outings.

Granted, this is by no means close to the numbers which we have become accustomed to seeing the Argentine produce on a yearly basis, but it was an impressive tally, nonetheless.

However, some fans have used Messi’s dip in goal contributions to hit out at the 35-year-old, with many pointing to the fact that Cristiano Ronaldo was still able to score 24 goals in 39 games last term – of course leaving out the fact that CR7 managed to produce 12 less assists than Messi in 2021/22.

Now, though, Ander Herrera has come out to defend Messi’s debut PSG campaign, before also labelling the attacker the best player of all time:

“You are asking for 50 goals per season,” Herrera told AS. “From there, if he doesn’t score them, people talk.

“Nor should we forget that Leo has had the all-time record in Ligue 1 – he has hit the post 10 times! If he had scored 10 more goals, it would [have] been a very good season for Leo.

“But for me, he is the best of all time, without any discussion. Now I admire him even more for how he manages his day to day life with total humility, [and] always with a smile for people.”
