Bayer Leverkusen forward Ernest Poku says he has not made a decision on whether to represent Ghana ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The 21-year-old, who has featured for the Netherlands at U16, U19 and U21 levels, remains eligible for the Black Stars through his Ghanaian roots. But speaking after Leverkusen’s Champions League game against Newcastle, Poku made it clear he needs more time.
“We have to see, I don’t know yet. I didn’t get a call or something… I have to talk with my parents and my agent about it, so I don’t know,” he told Oma Akatugba.
Poku joined Leverkusen last summer from AZ Alkmaar for €10 million plus €2m in add-ons, signing a five-year deal. He has quickly become an important part of Xabi Alonso’s squad, producing 5 goals and 6 assists in 25 appearances across all competitions.
At youth level, he scored for the Netherlands U19s in 2022 after earlier spells with the U16s, and later earned promotion to the U21s.
For now, Ghana will have to wait as the forward weighs his international future with his family and representatives.
