Erik Ten Hag’s mammoth Manchester United task made clear as damning defensive stat is revealed

Erik Ten Hag’s mammoth Manchester United task made clear as damning defensive stat is revealed

Four Manchester United players find themselves in the top 10 of errors leading to goals since the start of the 2020/21 season, led by captain Harry Maguire, in a damning indictment of just where it is going wrong for the Red Devils.

The Manchester United and England centre-back has endured a torrid season to date this campaign, coming off helping the Three Lions reach a major tournament final for the first time since 1966. However, for United, he has been well below par, and has made a massive 7 errors leading directly to goals for opponents.

Midfielder Nemanja Matic is second on the list with 6, while Maguire’s fellow defenders Aaron Wan Bissaka and Luke Shaw also feature on the list, each having made 4 such mistakes.

It means that the four players, three of whom are regular starters, have contributed 21 goals for opponents since the start of the 2020/21 season, more than their Manchester rivals Manchester City have conceded all season to date.

It also explains just how Manchester United have managed to ship 48 goals this campaign, more than relegation-threatened Burnley and the second-most in the top 10 behind Leicester City.

Ten Hag to fix mistakes?

Incoming boss Erik Ten Hag’s first job will be to stop his side conceding multiple goals a game as they have been doing recently. He has achieved this at Ajax, where his side have conceded 15 goals all season, but Ajax have long been the dominant force in Dutch football, so that is to be expected.

Whether he can have the same effect on a defence that is performing as a shadow of the close to £200 million value that the Red Devils shelled out for it remains to be seen, otherwise, he may be forced to do some severe and early restructuring.
