Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has dismissed suggestions that his 2023 switch to Al-Ahli was financially driven, insisting the move was inspired by ambition and belief in the club’s project.

The former Chelsea shot-stopper, who joined the Saudi side in a £16 million deal, helped Al-Ahli lift the Asian Champions League for the first time in May.

“From the start, I always said that when I left Chelsea, I knew I was joining another team where I could win everything,” Mendy told BBC Sport.

The 33-year-old says Al-Ahli made him feel he had a key role in their rise. “Two years later, we won the Champions League… so yes, that validates my choice,” he added.

Off the pitch, Mendy is giving back through a school project in Keur Massar, Senegal, and says hope not money ; was always his driving force.
