Former Asante Kotoko captain Edmund Owusu Ansah has expressed concern about the current level of the Ghana Premier League.
The ex-midfielder, who led Kotoko between 2003 and 2007 and later captained Ghana’s home-based national team at the 2009 African Nations Championship, says the local game has declined in quality.
Now based in the United States, he works as a youth coach with Real Salt Lake and its academy side, mentoring young players at U14 and U15 levels.
In an interview with Connect 97.1 FM in Takoradi, Owusu Ansah shared his candid assessment of the domestic league.
“The standard of the Ghana Premier League is not at its best. The standard is low. It’s difficult to see teams connect up to ten passes,” he expressed.
Beyond technical issues, he believes player attitude is a major concern.
“These current Ghana Premier League players don’t even give respect to themselves unlike our time. The current players all feel big and you can’t advise them.
“Pride is what gets these GPL players feeling they have arrived. Once a journalist starts complimenting them, they turn to believe they have arrived instead of believing hard work is what has got them there,” he stated.
