An attempt by former AshantiGold SC boss, Dr. Kwaku Frimpong, to purchase Ebony FC and rebrand it as the resurrected Goldfields FC has been turned down.
Dr. Frimpong, popularly known as ‘Champion’, reportedly tabled a bid of GHS700,000 to acquire the Ashanti Regional Division Two champions.
His plan was to relocate the club to Obuasi and have it compete in Zone II of the Access Bank Division One League next season under the historic Goldfields name.
However, the management of Ebony FC have denied agreeing to any sale.
According to sources, they are only willing to consider offers starting from GHS2 million.
Ebony FC recently won Zone 5 of the Division Two League and went on to secure the regional title by defeating Benab FC in the Middle League final, making them a hot prospect in Ghana football.
Dr. Frimpong’s interest comes after his club, AshantiGold SC, was suspended indefinitely by the Ghana Football Association for breaching statutes by continuing to engage with banned officials.
He and his son, Emmanuel Frimpong, were handed lengthy bans by the GFA Disciplinary Committee following their involvement in a match-fixing scandal.
The case stemmed from a 7-0 win by AshantiGold over Inter Allies in 2021, during which an Allies player deliberately scored two own goals to sabotage a bet allegedly placed by club officials.
