Former Ghanaian international Michael Essien credits his and Didier Drogba’s success at Chelsea for increasing European clubs’ trust and investment in African talent.
Essien and Drogba joined the Blues from Olympique Lyon and Marseille, respectively.
During their illustrious seven-year tenure, they won numerous titles, including two Premier League titles and the coveted 2012 UEFA Champions League.
Essien believes their achievements have fostered trust and investment in African players among European clubs.
“There is always a question if there is a big transfer over an African player. I think Didier Drogba and I made the European clubs trust the process and spend money,” Essien told Sky Sports.
After a blistering career with Real Madrid, AC Milan, and other teams, Essien has transitioned to management.
He currently serves as a first-team assistant coach at FC Nordsjaelland and holds prestigious UEFA A and Elite Youth A licenses.
