Ghana midfielder Daniel-Kofi Kyereh has taken a significant step in his recovery after returning to full first-team training with German Bundesliga side SC Freiburg for the first time in almost three years.
The 28-year-old has endured a long and frustrating spell on the sidelines after suffering a serious anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury in February 2023. Although he underwent surgery and an extensive rehabilitation programme, Kyereh experienced further setbacks in 2024, delaying his long-awaited comeback.
On Wednesday evening, the midfield playmaker finally trained fully with Freiburg’s senior team as the club prepared for their UEFA Europa League clash against Maccabi Tel Aviv, a major indication that he is nearing full fitness and edging closer to competitive action.
Kyereh joined Freiburg with high expectations but has so far been restricted to just 18 appearances, scoring three goals and providing one assist. His struggles with injury have stalled what had been a promising Bundesliga career.
Before moving to Freiburg, Kyereh enjoyed the most prolific spell of his career at St. Pauli, where he established himself as one of the standout performers in the German second tier, recording an impressive 22 goals and 21 assists in 67 appearances.
At international level, Kyereh has earned 18 caps for Ghana and was part of the Black Stars squad at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations. With the 2026 FIFA World Cup on the horizon, his return to training will be closely followed by the national team’s technical handlers.
As Ghana’s World Cup preparations gather pace, Kyereh’s progress represents a timely boost, with the midfielder now focused on regaining match sharpness and potentially forcing his way back into Black Stars contention.
