Veteran French coach Claude Le Roy has showered praise on Senegal star Sadio Mané for his outstanding performances at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, describing the forward’s tournament as exceptional from start to finish.
Mané, who played a central role in Senegal’s continental success, once again underlined his importance to the Teranga Lions as they clinched the AFCON title. The former Liverpool attacker produced a string of influential displays throughout the competition, proving decisive in key moments.
In the final against hosts Morocco in Rabat, the Al Nassr winger was instrumental as Senegal secured a 1–0 extra-time victory. Mané played a major part in the move that led to Pape Gueye’s winning goal, sealing Senegal’s second AFCON crown.
Speaking to Egyptian broadcaster ON Time Sports, Le Roy admitted he had initially questioned the physical consistency of some of Africa’s established stars ahead of the tournament.
“Before the tournament, I was saying that Mané, whose personality did not surprise me, and players like Riyad Mahrez, Mohamed Salah, and Aubameyang, you cannot expect much from them in terms of physical consistency,” he said, noting that he believed younger players such as Omar Marmoush looked more physically prepared.
However, the experienced tactician conceded that Mané proved him wrong with his relentless energy and leadership.
“From the first minute until the end of the competition, he looked like a player on a special mission,” Le Roy added. “His level really amazed me, especially as I thought his move to the Saudi League might affect him.”
Le Roy ultimately described Mané’s impact as decisive, concluding that the Senegalese forward “delivered an exceptional tournament in every sense of the word.”
Mané’s influence was formally recognised after the final when he was crowned Best Player of AFCON 2025, capping a memorable campaign for both player and country.
