Chris Hughton has been confirmed as the newly appointed Ghana Black Stars coach, marking his return to the dugout for the first time since September 2021.
The 64-year-old last managed English side Nottingham Forest when they played in the Championship but was sacked from that role.
Hughton had recently worked as Black Stars Technical Advisor for a year, helping former boss Otto Addo to qualify and participate in the Qatar 2022 Fifa World Cup. Both had their roles come to an end following Ghana’s exit from the group stage last December.
Hughton, however, emerged favourite to take over the vacant role.
Chris Hughton in frame for vacant Black Stars job – report
The England-born – to Ghanaian father Willie from Jamestown Accra but represented Northern Ireland as a player – has now been confirmed.
“The Ghana Football Association has the pleasure to appoint Chris Hughton as Head Coach of the Black Stars following extensive deliberations between the two parties.
“The appointment is in line with the vision of the GFA to continue with the project of building a formidable squad that started with Otto Addo in the lead-up to the Fifa World Cup Qatar 2022 tournament,” portions of a statement Sunday evening read.
Chris Hughton is to work with the existing assistants.
“The GFA has also decided to maintain Assistant Coaches George Boateng and Mas-Ud Didi Dramani. The three coaches were part of the technical team for the World Cup in Qatar.”
The GFA added: “Details about the duration of the contract and terms of engagement would be announced in due course.”
The Black Stars are back on international duties later in March where they face Angola back-to-back in the qualifiers for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon).
