Former Ghana head coach Chris Hughton is reportedly leading the race to become the next manager of the Zimbabwe national team.
The Warriors have been without a head coach since the dismissal of Michael Nees following a string of poor performances. Earlier this week, the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) opened applications for the vacant post, attracting over 300 candidates.
Despite competition from notable names such as Stuart Baxter, Pitso Mosimane, and Kaitano Tembo, Hughton is believed to be the preferred choice after formally applying for the role.
The 65-year-old tactician, who previously managed Brighton & Hove Albion, Nottingham Forest, and Newcastle United, has been out of work since parting ways with Ghana in January 2024.
ZIFA president Nqobile Magwizi confirmed that the recruitment process is in its final stages.
“The process of appointing a coach is at an advanced stage. I think by Monday or Tuesday next week, we should be in a position to make an announcement,” Magwizi told SuperSport’s Africa Sport.
Zimbabwe are scheduled to play Algeria in Saudi Arabia on November 13, before hosting Qatar four days later, as part of their preparations for the Africa Cup of Nations in December.
