Former Chelsea legend, Claude Makelele, has drawn the parallels between Manchester United’s young prodigy Kobbie Mainoo to Ghanaian legend Michael Essien.
According to Makelele, there’s a unique sembelace between the pair, which strikes him anytime he sees Mainoo play for the Red Devils.
Mainoo, who was largely a part of United’s youth setup before the commencement of the 2022/23 season, was an integral member of United’s campaign in the just-ended Premier League season.
His crowing moment came when he tucked in United’s 2nd goal in the Emirates FA Cup final to steer the team to victory against Manchester City.
Mainoo’s display all season has numerous legends churning out adulations to the young Ghanaian-born lad, who has been compared to Makelele, Clarence Seedorf, Yaya Toure, Paul Pogba and Zinedine Zidane, although Makelele sees a bit more of Michael Essien in the English-based star.
“ I will say Michael Essien. He need to learn from Michael Essien. He is young, you know, and he has a great future in front of him”, Makelele told the Daily Mail.
Whereas his Ghanaian compatriot (Essien) featured for the Black Stars in Africa Cup of Nations and World Cups, Mainoo has opted to represent the three Lions of England and is in line to nail a starting berth when England prepare to take on Serbia in the team’s first group game in Germany’s showpiece.(EURO’s)
Ultimately, Mainoo will aspire to take the team all the way to win the coveted crown after being beaten finalist in the last edition, a feat in itself which can distinguish him from Michael Essien at the national level.
