The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has confirmed that Carlos Queiroz will remain head coach of the Black Stars after agreeing a new coaching mandate with the Portuguese manager.
Queiroz’s original four-month contract ended last month following Ghana’s participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. His future had been uncertain while the GFA and the 73-year-old held discussions about the possibility of extending his appointment.
The association announced on Wednesday, 2 September 2026, that an agreement had now been reached. Queiroz’s new spell in charge will begin during the next international window.
“The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is pleased to announce that it has reached an agreement with Carlos Queiroz for his appointment as Head Coach of the Black Stars for the next phase of the team’s programme,” the GFA said.
Queiroz was appointed in April 2026 after Otto Addo left his position. He was brought in with the specific responsibility of leading Ghana at the World Cup, which was hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
During his time in charge, Ghana reached the knockout stages of the tournament for the first time since the 2010 World Cup. The Black Stars began their campaign with a 1-0 victory over Panama before drawing 0-0 with England.
They then lost 2-1 to Croatia in their final group match. Ghana subsequently suffered a 1-0 defeat by Colombia in the Round of 32.
That tournament run has now been followed by a fresh agreement that keeps Queiroz in charge as Ghana move into the next part of their international programme. The GFA said his international experience, technical expertise and familiarity with the Black Stars were important factors in its decision.
The Portuguese coach’s immediate task will be to oversee Ghana’s opening fixtures in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. Ghana are scheduled to travel to Bouake to face Cote d’Ivoire on 24 September 2026.
Three days later, the Black Stars will return home to host The Gambia in Accra. The two matches will mark the start of Queiroz’s new coaching mandate following the conclusion of his initial contract.
The GFA believes the manager’s previous work with the national side, combined with his experience at international level, makes him well suited to guide Ghana through the next phase. His continuation also provides the Black Stars with a settled appointment ahead of their upcoming qualifying campaign.
Queiroz’s first period in charge lasted four months and concluded after the World Cup. The new agreement confirms that he will now remain responsible for the team as Ghana prepare for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
