Dutch international of Ghanaian descent Brian Brobbey found the net, but his effort proved insufficient as Sunderland suffered a 3–1 defeat to West Ham United in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.
Played at the London Stadium, the encounter saw the Hammers deliver a dominant first-half display as they looked to steady their season after an inconsistent run of results.
West Ham opened the scoring in the 14th minute through Crysencio Summerville before captain Jarrod Bowen doubled the lead from the penalty spot. The hosts completed a commanding first half when Portugal international Mateus Fernandes struck in the 43rd minute to put the game firmly beyond Sunderland’s reach before the break.
After the restart, Sunderland showed improved intent and were rewarded when Brobbey pulled one back, finishing off a well-worked move set up by former Chelsea right-back Nordi Mukiele.
Despite the defeat, Brobbey stood out as one of Sunderland’s most lively performers in the Round 23 fixture, leading the line with energy and purpose.
The 23-year-old joined the Black Cats in September 2025 and has made a strong impression in his debut Premier League campaign. He has now recorded five goals and one assist in 17 league appearances, underlining his growing influence in Sunderland’s attack.
