Brendan Sarpong-Wiredu scored twice as Plymouth Argyle began their preparations for the 2026/27 campaign with a 4-2 pre-season victory over Tavistock A.F.C. on Tuesday night.
The England-born midfielder of Ghanaian descent played a central role in Plymouth’s win, recovering from an early setback before helping the League One side take control after half-time.
Tavistock made the stronger start and moved in front after 15 minutes, with Jacob Bowker finding the net to give the hosts an early advantage.
Plymouth responded quickly. Seven minutes after falling behind, Sarpong-Wiredu levelled the game with a composed finish, ensuring Argyle went into the interval on level terms.
The second half belonged largely to Plymouth, who increased the pressure and dominated the contest as the game progressed. Their greater control was rewarded when James Sharp put them ahead.
Sarpong-Wiredu then added his second goal of the evening in the 74th minute, extending Plymouth’s lead and completing an impressive individual contribution.
Caleb Roberts scored later in the match to complete the scoring, securing a four-goal return for Plymouth Argyle despite Tavistock’s early resistance.
The result gives Sarpong-Wiredu further encouragement as he continues to build momentum during pre-season. His two goals follow an already impressive run of form in Plymouth’s preparations and should provide an additional boost to his confidence before the new English football season begins.

For Sarpong-Wiredu, the brace was the clearest headline from the match. His first goal restored parity when Plymouth needed a response, while the second arrived in the 74th minute as Argyle’s dominance began to translate into a convincing scoreline.
