Blame technical team too for 2014 World Cup fiasco – Ex-Ghana goalkeeper Adam Kwarasey

Ex-Ghana goalkeeper Adam Kwarasey say the technical team of the Black Stars should also be blamed for the 2014 World Cup fiasco not just the players.

The World Cup finals ended up in disappointment as Ghana exited in the group stages without winning a match, and with issues of poor planning and payment bonuses being blamed for the poor performance, (although they did manage a 2-2 draw with eventual champions Germany).

Prior to their last group game against Portugal, the players threatened to boycott training if their demand for payment was not met. The government acted in time by sending more than $3m (£1.8m) in cash by plane to Brazil to pay the appearance fees owed to the national team at the global showpiece.

“Of course, what happens on the pitch is on us the players at the end of the day but I think some people know that they didn’t put things in order, the way they should have, to get the best out of the team,” Kwarasey told Joy Sports.

“I am NOT talking about money; believe that a lot of the players would have played their hearts out for Ghana without getting paid. This was more about the principle of what we went through that ended in all the chaos.”

Kevin Prince Boateng was sent home and suspended from the Ghana squad for disciplinary reasons, only hours before the final group match against Portugal, after he was alleged to have verbally abused former coach Kwesi Appiah during a team meeting. Boateng was sent home along with midfielder Sulley Muntari.

Ghana were the only team to not lose to Germany in the tournament.
