Former Ghanaian referee G.K. Manu has jumped to the defense of Ghana Premier League referees, insisting they’ve done their best under tough conditions.
He believes most of the criticism hurled at match officials is fueled by bias and emotion rather than fair assessment of their performance.
“Most of the journalists are fanatics to the home team, so if it does not go very well, they will put the blame on the referee and that is the norm of the country. When you go to the Accra Sports Stadium likewise they put the blame on the referees,” he told Citi Sports.
His remarks follow heavy backlash against referee Mohammed Misbau after officiating the heated Nations FC vs Basake Holy Stars clash, one that ended in controversy and a walk-off.
G.K. Manu argued that referees, despite working without proper equipment, are trying to uphold the integrity of the game.
“What about the coaches, what about the players on the pitch, so I am not saying no one should criticize the referees but rather they should be constructive criticisms rather than destructive ones,” he added.
