Black Stars technical team must expand their scouting net – Neil Armstrong Mortagbe

Football luminary Neil Armstrong Mortagbe has urged the upcoming technical team for the Black Stars to enhance their player scouting efforts.

The national team is presently without a head coach following the dismissal of Chris Hughton after the disappointing performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has responded by introducing a five-member committee tasked with recommending a coach to the Executive Council.

Mortagbe, the former Chief Executive Officer of Hearts of Oak, emphasized the importance of an extensive scouting initiative in identifying talent from both domestic and international sources. He stressed the need to assess whether the current players representing the national team are truly the best available.

In an interview with Graphic Sports, Mortagbe stated, “We still have a wide crop of players who are playing in the local league and places abroad. I think that we should widen the net and see whether position for position, we have our best.”

He added, “If we find that there are people better than those we have called our current stock, we must extend an invitation to those players.”

Simultaneously, the GFA has set February 2 as the deadline for the submission of applications for the vacant national team coaching position.
