Ghana’s Black Queens could pocket a record-breaking $1 million if they emerge champions of the 2024 TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), which gets underway on July 5 in Morocco.
CAF has unveiled a revamped prize structure for this year’s tournament, doubling the winner’s payout from $500,000 to $1 million—a bold move that underscores the growing investment in women’s football on the continent.
The total prize purse now stands at $3.475 million, with increased allocations for all participating teams.
Drawn in a challenging Group C alongside defending champions South Africa, Tanzania, and Mali, the Black Queens face a tough path to the title.
Still, the financial and sporting incentives are stronger than ever. Even a top-four finish could see Ghana earn between $300,000 and $500,000, depending on how far they go.
CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe explained that the increased funding is designed to directly support female players and the ecosystem around them.
“The increase in prize money should contribute to the salaries of women football players, coaches, and employees,” said Motsepe.
Here’s how the prize money breaks down for the 2024 edition:
- Champions: $1,000,000
- Runners-up: $500,000
- Third Place: $350,000
- Fourth Place: $300,000
- Quarterfinalists (4 teams): $200,000 each
- Third in Group (3 teams): $150,000 each
- Fourth in Group (3 teams): $125,000 each
