Mali coach Tom Saintfiet is optimistic about the potential return of captain Yves Bissouma, despite his absence from the opening Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) game against Zambia.
Bissouma, who has undergone ankle surgery, is expected to make a positive contribution later in the tournament.
Saintfiet said, “During tournaments, some players start with injuries, then become most dangerous in the quarters, semis, or final.”
The 29-year-old Spurs midfielder has only played 72 minutes this season, against Madagascar in a World Cup qualifier.
Saintfiet believes Bissouma’s experience and leadership will be crucial for Mali’s campaign, adding, “We need a captain who’s present both mentally and physically.”
