Barcelona moved 2-0 ahead against Al Ahly after Raphinha converted a penalty in the first half of their Joan Gamper Trophy meeting at Spotify Camp Nou on Wednesday evening.
The Brazil forward was brought down inside the penalty area, and the referee awarded Barcelona a spot-kick in the 45th minute. Raphinha took responsibility himself, sending the ball to the right of Al Ahly goalkeeper and Egypt international Mustafa Shobeir.
The penalty gave Barcelona a two-goal cushion before the interval and followed an opening goal from former Al Ahly forward Hamza Abdelkarim.
Abdelkarim broke the deadlock in the 30th minute after being picked out by a low cross from Barcelona left-back Alejandro Balde. The 18-year-old then chose not to celebrate, placing his hands beneath his head in a gesture of apology towards Al Ahly supporters.
The goal gave the occasion particular significance for Abdelkarim, who was facing his former club after completing a permanent move to Barcelona. He had initially joined the Catalan side on loan during the second half of last season.
In June 2026, Barcelona announced that they had activated the purchase option included in the young forward’s loan agreement. Abdelkarim subsequently signed a new contract with the club that runs until the summer of 2029.
The Egyptian striker had already attracted considerable attention during pre-season. He scored in Barcelona’s 5-2 victory over Swiss club Basel and also found the net twice in a 2-2 draw with English side Birmingham City.
His decision to acknowledge rather than celebrate his goal added an emotional element to a match in which he was competing against the club where he had previously played. Barcelona, meanwhile, took advantage of their opportunities to establish control before half-time, with Raphinha’s penalty adding to Abdelkarim’s early contribution.
The match is being played at Spotify Camp Nou as part of the Joan Gamper Trophy, with Barcelona hosting Al Ahly in the annual fixture.
A video of Raphinha’s penalty showed the Brazilian calmly placing his effort beyond Shobeir and into the right-hand side of the net. The spot-kick marked the second goal of the contest for Barcelona and reinforced their advantage over the Egyptian side.
