Barcelona’s proposed move for Julian Alvarez has entered a period of uncertainty after 1 August passed without an agreement being reached with Atletico de Madrid.
The Catalan club had been working towards completing what was viewed as their biggest attacking target of the summer before the start of the month. However, with no deal in place and no expected response having arrived, questions are now being raised over whether Barcelona’s offer remains active or has been withdrawn.
According to Spanish newspaper Sport, Barcelona never set a formal deadline for their proposal, either publicly or in writing. Nevertheless, the club had been operating according to an internal plan to resolve the transfer before August began.
That timetable was intended to prevent negotiations from continuing throughout pre-season and would have allowed Barcelona to redirect their budget towards other priorities if the attempt to sign Alvarez was unsuccessful.
With August now under way, the club has yet to clarify whether its proposal is still on the table or whether its validity has effectively expired. Although Barcelona have not officially closed the door on the transfer, the indications are that their room for manoeuvre has become increasingly limited.
Alvarez signal gave Barcelona encouragement
Alvarez made his position clear at a crucial stage of the negotiations and took the initiative by sending a signal that was interpreted within Barcelona as evidence that the move could be completed.
His stance was also viewed as an indication that he was willing to listen to Barcelona’s sporting project. That willingness kept the possibility of a transfer alive inside the club for several weeks and strengthened the belief that an agreement might be closer than the financial figures suggested.
However, the player’s position alone cannot bridge the gap between the two clubs. Barcelona still face significant differences with Atletico de Madrid on both the financial terms and the timing of the proposed move, while the Madrid club has not matched Alvarez’s apparent readiness to consider a transfer.
Atletico maintain firm position
Atletico de Madrid have offered no concessions during the negotiations and have neither reduced their demands nor shown a willingness to accelerate the departure of a player they consider important to their interests at this stage of the transfer market.
The club’s stance reflects the importance of Alvarez to the squad. Allowing him to leave late in the summer would force Atletico to search for a replacement of a reliable standard with limited time available to complete the process.
That position has made Barcelona’s internal deadline more difficult to meet. The tension between the two clubs, which has continued for several weeks, has shaped the entire course of the negotiations.
