Barcelona are refusing to enter a bidding war to keep Ferran Torres, despite interest from several clubs led by Paris Saint-Germain.
According to Catalan newspaper Sport, Barcelona will offer Torres a contract extension that follows the club’s current wage policy. The proposed terms would come into effect in September, and the club has no intention of improving them if the Spain forward receives more lucrative offers elsewhere.
Barcelona remain keen to retain Torres but will not overpay to do so. Should the 25-year-old decide he wants to leave, the club would be prepared to negotiate a transfer for “a fair value”.
The club considers Torres a suitable player for its sporting project because of his attacking qualities and his standing within the dressing room. He made a positive contribution last season and was involved in a considerable number of goals.
However, Barcelona do not regard any player as indispensable, meaning the final decision has been placed in Torres’ hands. He is expected to decide whether he wants to continue his career at the club or seek a move away.
Barcelona took a significant financial risk to sign Torres, paying €55m for him during a difficult period for the club’s finances. His market value subsequently increased after he impressed at the most recent World Cup and won the tournament with Spain.
Despite the reports linking Torres with Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona have not received any official contact from the French club. Their information about Paris Saint-Germain’s interest has so far come through media reports rather than direct communication.
The Catalan club expects Torres to provide a definitive answer next week, either confirming that he intends to stay or asking to leave. The timing is significant, with the transfer window entering its decisive phase.
If Torres chooses to depart, Barcelona will aim to secure the highest possible financial return from the deal. There is a belief within the club that forwards command substantial market values, and Barcelona’s minimum requirement for completing a transfer would be to recover the €55m they paid to sign him.
That stance reflects Barcelona’s view that Torres remains valuable, while also making clear that the club will not allow outside interest to dictate its wage structure. The proposed renewal is therefore expected to remain unchanged, regardless of whether other clubs offer the player more money.
A departure would also create a major problem for manager Hansi Flick. Barcelona would be left without a specialist first-choice centre-forward, apart from the young Egyptian striker Hamza Abdelkarim.
That prospect would increase Flick’s calls for the club to sign another striker. Barcelona could find that difficult, however, with the market currently offering few readily available players in that position.
