Barcelona chief speaks out over Frenkie de Jong to Man United links

Barcelona director Mateu Alemany has, on Sunday, provided a fresh insight into the future of transfer-linked midfielder Frenkie de Jong.

De Jong, of course, has endured something of a hit-and-miss campaign to date.

Amid a remarkably inconsistent term on the part of Barca’s squad as a whole, the gifted midfielder has often found himself singled out as something of a scapegoat, amid suggestions that de Jong too often simply allows the game to pass him by.

And such qualms on the part of the Catalan giants’ fanbase, in turn, have culminated in inevitable speculation regarding a potential parting of ways between Barcelona and the club’s big-money 2019 arrival come the summer.

Manchester United, for one, have been hotly tipped as a potential landing spot for the 24-year-old, a move which would of course see him reunite with the incoming Erik ten Hag.

Speaking to the media ahead of Barcelona’s meeting with Getafe on Sunday evening, it therefore came as little surprise when the subject of de Jong’s future was put to sporting director Mateu Alemany.

And the Blaugrana chief, in truth, did little to quell the speculation surrounding the club’s midfield star, simply assuring that ‘we haven’t made any decisions on the squad’ ahead of next season.

FdJ misses out

The latest word on de Jong’s future of course comes with the Dutchman having been forced to sit out on Sunday night, as Barca see out their penultimate La Liga outing of the campaign.

Whilst Xavi Hernandez’s troops do battle with Getafe at the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez, their transfer-linked midfielder is watching on from home, owing to suspension.

As things stand inside the closing ten minutes of the clash, meanwhile, the scoreline remains goalless.
