Athletic Bilbao forward Inaki Williams handed maiden Ghana call-up for September friendlies

Ghana coach Otto Addo has handed Athletic Bilbao forward Inaki Williams his first national call-up for the upcoming International friendly matches against Brazil and Nicaragua.

The 28-year-old was among six players who switched their international allegiance to Ghana. Williams, who was born in Bilbao to Ghanaian parents, was capped once by Spain.

Williams became the first black player to score in the club’s 117-year history after netting against Torino in February 2015.

He grew up wanting to play for Spain and represented them at youth level, but after making his senior international bow for La Roja in 2015 in a 3-1 friendly win over Bosnia he found the door of the national team shut to him.

The 29-man squad includes Brighton defender Tariq Lamptey, Southampton FC’s Mohammed Salisu, Stephan Ambrosius of Karlsruher SC and Inaki Williams who plays for Spanish La Liga side Athletic Bilbao.

Ghana will play two matches in the September window as part of preparations towards the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 finals in November/December.

Ghana will play Brazil on Friday, September 23, at Stade Oceane in Le Harve- France before taking on Nicaragua at Estadio Francisco Artes Carrasco in Lorca, Spain on Tuesday, September 27, 2022.
