Aston Villa plotting bid for Morelos

Aston Villa may continue their aggressive approach to the summer transfer window with a move for a new forward.

What’s the word?

That is according to a report from the 90min, who claim that Steven Gerrard’s side are circling and trying to prise Alfredo Morelos from the clutches of Glasgow Rangers.

Whilst the report states that a raid on his former employers would not go down well, there is now a possibility that Rangers would be open to the departure of their Colombian goal-getter with talks over a contract extension said to have hit the buffers.

Morelos is entering the final year of his contract with the Glasgow outfit, so a quick sale for the striker may be an enticing proposition for a side who could ultimately lose him on a free come next year, via the Bosman ruling.

It is said that the Scottish giants will require a fee of around £30m to let their star-forward depart, with the report noting fellow Premier League sides Newcastle United and West Ham United as teams who have previously been linked.

Morelos the Maverick

Ever since his move from HJK Helsinki, the “maverick” Morelos has enjoyed consistent attacking returns for Rangers, having scored 11 or more goals in each of his five Scottish Premiership campaigns.

Should Gerrard sign Morelos?

At the age of 26, the striker has 113 goals and 51 assists for Rangers over 224 appearances, ranking him amongst some of the Gers’ highest goalscorers – and just eight behind club legend Kris Boyd.

His style is rash at times and ultimately physical, but it makes for a spectacular goal record and means that Morelos has every attribute needed to shine in the Premier League.

A transfer to an ambitious Aston Villa side under previous manager Gerrard would be a great way to adapt to England’s top-flight, whilst Villa’s goal threat would most certainly be increased by the Colombian’s arrival.

This is a move that would bring a lot of excitement for the Villa faithful, and a move that Lange needs to pull off in order to achieve established depth up-front.
