Aston Villa confirm third summer signing under Steven Gerrard

Aston Villa have confirmed that Sevilla defender Diego Carlos has become their third summer signing as Steven Gerrard continues to try and build a squad capable of competing for European football next season.

Following a disappointing campaign, which saw European aspirations end in mid-table mediocrity at Villa Park as well as a change in manager, the Villians have begun their season in serious fashion.

They had already confirmed their decision to make Philippe Coutinho’s loan move from Barcelona permanent, for a fee of around 20 million euros, while they also added highly-rated French midfielder Boubacar Kamara to their squad on a free the day after the end of the Premier League season.

Now, they have confirmed the addition of Brazil and Sevilla defender Diego Carlos, with the 29-year-old bringing a wealth of European and domestic experience from his 3 campaigns with the Spanish side.

The deal sees him pen a four-year contract at Villa Park, while his signing will set Villa back around £30m, according to reports.

Carlos’ promise

Speaking to the Aston Villa website, Diego Carlos revealed his dream to play in the Premier League, and promised to give 100% for his new club.

‘I am really happy because the Premier League is one of the best competitions’, he said.

‘I always want to do the best for the club and the shirt I’m wearing.’

‘Even now I can’t believe I’m here because it’s a dream to compete in the Premier League,” he added. “And now I have a very clear opportunity, I hope to give it 100% my best, and to be able to play to the best of my ability.’
