Asante Kotoko striker Kwame Opoku has reportedly been told to leave the club after being accused of gross misconduct, with the 27-year-old no longer considered part of the plans for the 2026/27 season.
The decision was reported by Kumasi-based Opemsuo Radio, which says Asante Kotoko Director of Football Stanley Menzo and head coach Eric Tinkler have advised Opoku to search for a new club.
Menzo and Tinkler are understood to have told the forward that they cannot guarantee him a place in the squad being assembled for the new campaign. The report does not provide further details about the alleged gross misconduct, but indicates that Opoku’s future at the club is now uncertain.
The development comes less than a year after Opoku returned to Asante Kotoko from Moroccan side Olympique Khouribga. He signed a two-and-a-half-year contract with the Porcupine Warriors after leaving the Moroccan club.
His second spell in Kumasi was disrupted by injuries during the 2025/26 season. Despite those fitness problems, Opoku scored four goals in 16 appearances for Asante Kotoko.
The striker had previously enjoyed a productive first spell with the club in the 2020/21 campaign. He scored six goals and supplied three assists in 16 matches, performances which attracted interest from Algeria.
Opoku subsequently joined Algerian giants USM Alger before moving to Olympique Khouribga in Morocco. His return to Asante Kotoko was intended to continue his association with the club, but he now appears set to leave again as Tinkler oversees a reshaping of the squad.
Asante Kotoko are preparing their playing group for the 2026/27 season, and Opoku is expected to look for a new destination as he attempts to revive his career. The club’s decision means his latest spell with the Porcupine Warriors could end after only one season, despite his contract having more than two years remaining when he signed.
The reported instruction to find another club places Opoku’s immediate future among the key issues to be resolved before the new campaign. For the forward, the priority will now be securing regular football and rebuilding momentum after a season affected by injuries.
No further information has been given about whether the club intends to terminate his contract, negotiate a transfer or allow him to depart under another arrangement. For now, the report indicates that Opoku does not feature in the squad plans being made by Menzo and Tinkler.
