Asamoah Gyan says Ghanaian football fans should decide whether he deserves to be regarded as a national legend following his retirement from football.
Gyan is Ghana’s all-time leading scorer, with 51 international goals, and is also Africa’s highest-scoring player in FIFA World Cup history, having scored six times in the competition.
The former Sunderland, Al Ain and Liberty Professionals striker discussed his legacy while appearing on Kenya’s Sports Garage Show. He acknowledged that his career was accompanied by criticism, but believes supporters’ views have changed with time and that many now recognise the scale of his contribution to Ghana.
The 40-year-old said opinions about him had evolved since he stepped away from the game. However, despite his achievements with the national team, Gyan believes he should not be the person to decide whether the “legend” label applies to him.
Instead, he has left that judgement to the fans who watched and followed his career.
Gyan represented Ghana for more than 15 years and appeared at seven Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and three FIFA World Cups. His international career made him one of the country’s most decorated footballers and established him as one of Africa’s leading strikers.
His six World Cup goals remain the most scored by an African player in the history of the tournament. He is also Ghana’s record goalscorer, a mark that underlines his importance to the Black Stars over an extended period.
Yet Gyan’s standing has not always been viewed in the same way by every supporter. He faced criticism during his playing career, but believes the passage of time has allowed fans to reassess what he delivered for the national side.
Rather than claiming legendary status for himself, Gyan has chosen to leave the decision with the Ghanaian public. His comments reflect a view that such recognition is ultimately conferred by supporters rather than assigned by the player concerned.
Gyan’s international record includes appearances at seven Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and three World Cups, giving him a long association with Ghana’s most important football occasions. Alongside his record number of goals for the country, those appearances form the basis of his reputation as one of Ghana’s outstanding footballers.
The debate over his legacy will therefore remain with the fans who witnessed his career. Gyan has made clear that, after retiring, he will not determine whether he should be called a legend. That decision, he says, belongs to the people who followed his time with Ghana.
