Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has reiterated that he is not a politician, despite his recent appointment by the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
His comments come after being appointed to chair the youth and sports sub-committee of the ruling party’s 2024 Manifesto Committee.
Gyan described his appointment as an honor to serve his country, and added he would have accepted a similar role from any political party, including the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
In an interview on Asaase Radio’s Asaase Breakfast Show, Gyan emphasized that his motivation is to serve Ghana, not to engage in politics.
“I thought this was a great honor. I am not a politician. If the National Democratic Congress (NDC) had approached me, I would have done the same thing, but they didn’t see it from that angle. The NPP saw it and contacted me,” Gyan said.
“It’s a great honor for me, and I am happy and poised to do it wholeheartedly. It’s for Ghana, but in Ghana, everything is related to politics,” he added.
Gyan is the all-time leading goalscorer of the Ghana national team, with 51 goals.
