Arsenal defender Kieran Tierney issues positive injury update ahead of new season

Arsenal full-back Kieran Tierney has revealed that he is ahead of schedule to recover from a knee injury that ruled him out for the back portion of the 2021-22 campaign.

The defender pulled up injured after his international games with Scotland, meaning that he missed the final 10 games of Arsenal’s Premier League season. And, his absence, alongside that of Thomas Partey, saw his side stutter and stumble, winning just 5 of their last 10 games, giving up fourth spot to Tottenham in the process.

However, in a boost to Arsenal ahead of the new season kicking off on August 6th, Tierney has revealed that he is ahead of schedule for his recovery and that he expects to be able to join up with the team at the end of June for the beginning of pre season.

‘My target is to be back for the end of June and the start of pre-season at Arsenal. I’m on course for that. My rehab’s going well’, he told the Scottish Sun.

The defender was quick to shower praise on the medical team at Arsenal too, revealing that ‘I can’t give the Arsenal sports science, fitness and medical staff enough credit. They are absolutely top notch. I couldn’t wish for a better support set-up here.’

Injury worries force Hickey move?

While it will undoubtedly be good news for Mikel Arteta to see Tierney back and available, his absences are beginning to mount. Since he joined the club in 2019, he has missed 48 games across three seasons, and those absences have cost his side dear in the back end of the last two campaigns.

It is likely for this reason that the Gunners are reportedly ready to table a 25m euro bid for compatriot Aaron Hickey, who has been impressive during his season with Bologna.

A new addition would provide both competition, cover and rest for Tierney, and in a season in which Arsenal are looking to push for top 4 as well as entertain European ambitions, they need strength in depth.
