Arsenal are close to completing their long-running move for Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes, with the Brazil midfielder expected to undergo a medical later this week.
A full agreement between the two Premier League clubs is now considered almost complete. Guimaraes is waiting for permission to leave Newcastle’s training base in La Manga, Spain, so he can complete the formalities required to finalise his transfer to Emirates Stadium.
Arsenal are preparing for the 28-year-old’s medical as they move towards the final stages of the deal. There has been no official confirmation of the transfer fee, although sources indicate the overall cost could reach £80m.
The move would see Guimaraes join Arsenal after three years at Newcastle United. He moved to St James’ Park from Lyon in 2022 and has since become the club’s captain.
Guimaraes has made clear his desire to join Arsenal, where he has emerged as manager Mikel Arteta’s preferred target for the central midfield position. The player’s intention to make the move has helped the two clubs progress discussions during the week.
BBC Sport reported on 30 July that Guimaraes was expected to join the Premier League champions after a breakthrough in negotiations. Since then, Newcastle and Arsenal have continued talks over the finer details of the agreement.
Those discussions are now understood to have reached the point where a final agreement is regarded as a formality, subject to the remaining procedures being completed.
Guimaraes’ departure would bring an end to his time with Newcastle, who signed him from Lyon in 2022. Arsenal, meanwhile, are now focusing on the immediate steps needed to complete the transfer, including the midfielder’s medical and his move from Newcastle’s training camp in Spain.
No fee has yet been confirmed by the clubs, but the indication from sources is that the deal could be worth as much as £80m. The completion of the transfer remains dependent on the final formalities, with Guimaraes still awaiting clearance to leave La Manga.
The expected move follows a protracted period of negotiations between Arsenal and Newcastle United. However, with the major elements of the deal now in place and the player keen to move, Guimaraes is nearing a switch to Emirates Stadium.
