Arsenal blow as Barcelona star completes U-turn by agreeing one-year contract extension

Arsenal have been dealt a major blow to their hopes of landing versatile Barcelona star Sergi Roberto after the midfielder reportedly decided to accept the offer of a one-year contract extension at the Camp Nou.

The 30-year-old will be available on a free transfer this summer with numerous clubs, including the Gunners, keen on striking a deal for the midfielder, who can also play as a right-back.

Talks over an extension to remain in Catalonia have been on hold, with suggestions that Roberto had decided it was time for a move.

However, new discussions opened last week over a one-year extension at a lower salary, despite Roberto wanting two.

Although it appeared those talks were not successful, SPORT now states that the player has agreed to stay put.

Indeed, Roberto has given the green light to extend his stay at the Camp Nou, news that will please boss Xavi.

The Barca chief wants the Spain international on board next season due to the versatility he brings to his squad.

Roberto has had a difficult season, having undergone surgery in December. Indeed, he only returned to training in early April.

But with Sergino Dest potentially ruled out for the rest of the campaign, Roberto is likely to get some game time between now and then.

He is expected to be given a start against Mallorca in Barca’s next game, by which time his extension should be signed.

Roberto blow for Gunners boss Arteta

The news will, however, come as a blow to Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta. The Emirates chief was looking to lure his fellow countryman to north London.

The fact that the experienced international would have been able to cover two positions in the Gunners squad would have been a major plus for Arteta, especially if Arsenal can secure a return to Champions League football this term.

They are currently in a prime position to do so, leading bitter rivals Tottenham by two points with five games remaining.
