Araujo pens new deal/Mingueza positive for Covid-19

Mixed news for Barcelona as one defender pens new deal, whilst another tests positive for Covid-19

It has proven something of a mixed day to date when it comes to ongoings at Spanish giants FC Barcelona, amid confirmation of both positive and negative news on the personnel front.

First up comes the former.

As per a series of announcements across the club’s social media platforms, Ronald Araujo has committed his long-term future to Barca, courtesy of a new contract.

The Uruguayan, quickly establishing himself as something of a leader in the Blaugrana’s backline, had seen his name take centre stage in the media of late, amid rumoured interest in his signature on the part of Chelsea, Manchester United and more.

On Thursday, though, Araujo has put any such speculation firmly to bed, by means of putting pen to paper on a deal through the summer of 2026:

Mingueza blow

The latest word surrounding another member of Xavi Hernandez’s defensive ranks in Cataluyna, on the other hand, is of an altogether less positive nature.

The player in question? Oscar Mingueza.

Unlike the aforementioned Araujo, versatile stopper Mingueza has found game time altogether difficult to come by of late, though he was afforded a start in the 2nd leg of Barcelona’s recent Europa League tie with Eintracht Frankfurt.

Any such hopes on the part of the Spaniard of carving out further starts over the coming weeks, though, have today been dealt a blow.

This comes with a further statement on the part of the Blaugrana having confirmed that Mingueza has returned a positive test for Covid-19:
