Former Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak coach, Charles Kwablan Akonnor, has urged the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to take decisive action against poor officiating in the Ghana Premier League, describing it as a major threat to the progress of local football.
Reflecting on the just-ended 2024/25 season, which was marred by controversial officiating decisions at various match centres, Akonnor expressed deep concern over the integrity of the league.
“Match officiating is a big problem,” the former Black Stars coach told Citi Sports. “And I’ve heard it, what are you telling me? I’ve seen videos. Whether it’s true or not, I don’t have the evidence, but these things keep coming.”
He stressed that the persistent nature of such complaints was embarrassing and could severely hamper the development of the domestic game if not addressed promptly.
In other news, Bibiani GoldStars have been crowned champions of the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League. The Miners will mark their triumph with a coronation match against Medeama SC at DUN’s Park on Saturday, June 14.
